The aim of the Malakta Artist in Residency (AiR) programme is to provide a creative space where artists can work, develop, share, interact and experiment as well as a space for inner reflection and recharge.

Malakta is located in the middle of a beautiful and quiet countryside, and is a family friendly residence. We have artist families as permanent habitants and our community of artists is active daily, so atmosphere is welcoming, life filled and safe.  And by the way, we have two saunas!

The residency is suitable for both individual artist and groups and families. We offer access to a range of studios and work facilities, and a place to meet with other creative people in a cozy and collaborative community. We encourage applications from a wide range of artists of different cultural and geographic backgrounds. We are open for applications for all phases – from initial research to finishing works.

For our artists we offer possibilities to hold artist talks, exhibitions, engage with community arts activities and to realize collaborative projects. Tailored individually. We want artists also to experience the beautiful Ostrobothnian nature and culture.

The Malakta AiR offers both a two bedroom fully furnished apartment and single rooms with access to shared kitchen and bathroom facilities an d access to extensive working facilities and equipment.

For selected artists we offer possibilities to hold artist talks, exhibitions, engage with community arts activities, realice collaborative projects and to experience the beautiful Ostrobothnian nature and culture.

 

Working and Studios

Studio Toivo,  is on the top of Malakta, a space with high ceiling and windows from all directions allowing light to flow through.

Studio Eila, also on the same floor as Toivo. The studio has a massive fireplace and a nice view over Malax river and the courtyard.

Spray tower – A cozy space with acoustics perfect for arranging concerts, performances and exhibitions, the multifunctional heart of Malakta. With access to the garden with fruit trees and herbs. There are also chickens and rabbits.

 

The Malakta AiR offers private sleeping rooms with access to shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Working studio is to be chosen according to each artist’s needs and wishes.

       

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also a wide range of workshops are accessible for the artists, with basic tools for wood, metal, clay, textile and graffiti. Graphic print space and a darkroom.

   

Heal Inn, a space for wellness and recovery. Wooden floor and good vibes for dance, yoga and meditation.

 

 

 

Other facilities

We have two wood fired saunas and the possibility to go swimming in the river just beside them. Malakta is located at the coastline in ostrobothnia and there is not a long bike ride to the sea.

In the courtyard there is a fireplace for evening grills and get-togethers.

Get around

There are bikes at the residency for artists to use and food stores nearby. There are also possibilities to carpooling with other artists in Malakta or local buses to get around.

Selected applicants will be notified by email.

Fees:

The programme fee is 1750€ per month. We also offer a small number of subsidised places, these are awarded to artists that are interested and willing to participate in community and outreach based projects.

Malakta can provide residents with a detailed letter of confirmation and assist in other ways with funding opportunities in the artist’s home country.
